Waxing Guide: What to Know Before Your First Appointment
Thinking about waxing for the first time? Here''s everything you need to know — from how to prepare to what to expect during and after your appointment.
Waxing Guide: What to Know Before Your First Appointment
If you've never been waxed before, it's normal to have questions — and maybe a little anxiety. The good news is that waxing is one of the most straightforward beauty services out there, and with the right preparation, it's much more comfortable than most people expect.
Here's everything you need to know before your first waxing appointment at Hobson's Edge.
What Services Do We Offer?
At Hobson's Edge Hair Studio, we offer a full range of waxing services:
- Brow shaping — our most popular waxing service
- Upper lip and chin
- Full face waxing
- Underarms
- Arms and legs
- Bikini and Brazilian
- Back and chest
Whether you're coming in for a quick brow cleanup or a full body wax, we use professional-grade wax and take the time to do it right.
How Long Does Hair Need to Be?
This is the most common question we get — and it matters. Hair needs to be at least ¼ inch long (about the size of a grain of rice) for the wax to grip it properly. That's roughly 2–3 weeks of growth after shaving.
If your hair is too short, the wax won't be able to remove it cleanly, and you'll end up with patchy results. If you've been shaving, stop at least 2–3 weeks before your appointment.
If your hair is very long (more than ½ inch), we may trim it slightly before waxing for a cleaner application.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
Do:
- Let hair grow to at least ¼ inch
- Exfoliate the area 24–48 hours before your appointment (not the day of)
- Come with clean, dry skin — no lotions, oils, or deodorant on the area being waxed
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30–45 minutes before if you're concerned about sensitivity
Don't:
- Sunbathe or use a tanning bed 24 hours before
- Apply retinol or exfoliating acids to the area for 48 hours before
- Wax over broken skin, sunburn, or active breakouts
- Drink alcohol before your appointment (it can increase skin sensitivity)
What Happens During the Appointment
Here's what a typical waxing appointment looks like:
- Consultation — We'll ask about your skin type, any products you're using, and what result you're going for
- Cleanse — The area is cleaned and prepped
- Wax application — Warm wax is applied in the direction of hair growth
- Removal — The wax (or strip) is removed quickly against the direction of growth
- Finishing — Any remaining hair is tweezed, and a soothing product is applied
The whole process is faster than most people expect. A brow wax takes about 10–15 minutes. A full leg wax takes 30–45 minutes.
Does It Hurt?
Honestly — yes, a little. But most people find it much more manageable than they anticipated, especially after the first time.
A few things that affect discomfort:
- Location: Brows and legs are generally less sensitive. Bikini and Brazilian areas are more so.
- Hair thickness: Coarser hair takes more effort to remove
- Skin sensitivity: Hormonal changes (menstrual cycle, pregnancy) can increase sensitivity
- Experience: It genuinely gets easier with each appointment as hair grows back finer
The discomfort is brief — a quick sting that fades within seconds. Most clients describe it as "not as bad as I thought."
Aftercare: The First 24–48 Hours
The skin is more sensitive immediately after waxing. Here's how to take care of it:
Avoid for 24–48 hours:
- Hot showers, saunas, or steam rooms
- Sun exposure and tanning beds
- Tight clothing over waxed areas
- Deodorant on freshly waxed underarms
- Gym workouts (sweat + friction can irritate freshly waxed skin)
- Exfoliating products
Do:
- Apply a soothing, fragrance-free lotion or aloe vera gel
- Wear loose, breathable clothing
- Keep the area clean and dry
How Long Do Results Last?
Most people see smooth results for 3–6 weeks, depending on how fast their hair grows. With regular waxing, hair tends to grow back finer and sparser over time — which means less discomfort and longer-lasting results with each appointment.
For the best results, try to maintain a consistent waxing schedule rather than going back to shaving between appointments. Shaving resets the hair growth cycle and makes the next wax more uncomfortable.
